Why Technical Skill Alone Doesn't Get You Hired in Cybersecurity — and How to Actually Fix the Interview Gap

Published 09 Oct 2026

Here's a pattern we see often: a student finishes a cybersecurity course, genuinely knows the material, can find real vulnerabilities, understands the tools — and still doesn't get hired. Not because the technical skill is missing. Because the interview itself goes badly, and nothing in a typical curriculum ever addresses that.

The Gap No Syllabus Covers

Penetration testing, bug bounty methodology, VAPT reporting — these are taught in depth everywhere, including in RudraSec's own courses. What almost no cybersecurity course teaches is the actual skill of performing well in a live technical interview: explaining your own work clearly under pressure, answering in fluent spoken English when your reading comprehension is already strong, and staying composed when a panel pushes back on an answer.

This is especially real for students whose first language isn't English and who learned technical English by reading, not speaking. You can understand a CVE writeup perfectly and still freeze explaining it out loud to a stranger.

Reading About Interview Skills Doesn't Build Them

"Interview tips" articles and YouTube videos are everywhere. None of them put you in an actual live conversation where you have to respond in real time, in your own words, under mild pressure — which is the actual skill being tested in a real interview. Reading about swimming doesn't teach you to swim.

What Actually Builds This Skill: Real Conversation Practice

This is specifically why RudraSec built VANI — a real-time AI voice coach, not a chatbot. You have an actual live, two-way spoken conversation with it, the same way a phone call works, across a structured 42-level curriculum that progresses from pronunciation and grammar up through full spoken discussion and mock-interview-style conversation. It includes a dedicated interview practice mode specifically for this — practicing the actual skill of explaining yourself out loud, repeatedly, until it stops being the thing that trips you up.

It's available in 8 languages and works for any skill level, not just cybersecurity students — but if you're finishing an RTS course and heading into technical interviews, this is the piece most curricula (including, historically, most of ours) leave out.

Try It

VANI is a real product at vani.rudrasec.in — built by the same team as RudraSec's cybersecurity courses, for exactly this gap. If you're enrolled in or considering EHM1, EHM2, or any of our other programs, pairing it with your technical training is the difference between knowing the material and actually getting hired on the strength of it.
